FutureFest

BBC Click – FutureFest weekend

BBC Click is off to FutureFest this weekend and Phuket Island Radio has the whole story for you on Sunday morning from 9:30 am.

FutureFest, the Festival of the Future, in London takes place on the 17th-18th of September at Tobacco Dock in London. There’s no need to worry if you can’t make it, tune into 102.5 FM on Sunday and listen to the BBC Click team.

FutureFest love, play, work and thrive.

During the weekend FutureFest will confront how the world we know is changing. Technology is transforming the way we live and love,  work is being automated, politics is being reset.

Hosted by the UK’s innovation foundation Nesta, FutureFest will explore four themes central to all our lives – love, play, work and thrive – through live performances, presentations, and experiences to immerse visitors in the future.

Speakers include Brian Eno, DJ Spooky, writer Rhianna Pratchett and Co-founder of DeepMind Technologies Mustafa Suleyman

DJ Spooky at FutureFest.

DJ Spooky

Exploring the theme of Music and love with an overview of how DJ culture is heading in the decades to come.

Paul Dennis Miller, known by his stage name DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid, is a Washington DC-born electronic and experimental hip hop musician whose work is often called by critics or his fans as “illbient” or “trip-hop”.

Brian Eno

Through the weekend Brian will argue that it is equally central to the continued psychological and social development of adults – and that, through Art and Culture, we should continue playing throughout the whole of our lives. He will explore the socio-political implications for society of ‘remaining in play’.

Brian first came to international prominence in the early 70s as a founding member of Roxy Music, followed by a series of highly acclaimed vocal and instrumental solo albums. Towards the end of 2015, Eno appeared in a filmed public forum in London, England, titled “Basic income: How do we get there?”, about the benefits and the need for a basic income. It was hosted by Basic Income UK and also included economist Frances Coppola and anthropologist David Graeber.  Read more about Brian.

Click looks at the future of sports, looking ahead to the first-ever Bionic Games on 8 October.

What can we really expect from the emerging era of human enhancement?

We consider the question of virtual reality versus identity with a closer look at romance in the virtual world. The physical and virtual worlds are colliding thanks to the commercialization of immersive technologies and our future love-lives will increasingly take place in 3D virtual real-time environments.

What does this mean for our identities and relationships? With personalized avatars that allow us to be, and find, the lover of our choice, how will this affect our social abilities in the real world in the future?

This week we are joined by, Professor Andy Miah, Chair in Science Communication & Future Media, from the University of Salford, Manchester. The body technologist, Ghislaine Boddington, and Marie Horner, a Broadcast and Digital Programme Producer.

BBC Click is transmitted every Sunday morning at 9:30, along with three other BBC programmes starting from 8 AM. Healthcheck, Discovery, and Science in Action
