What’s happening At Unit 27 Group?
Phuket Island Radio meets up with owner Rob Hallam and his son Dayle to find out.
Well, it’s been a crazy two years since we opened our doors to deliver two sessions a day out of a compact, but extremely well-equipped, gym with a world-class Coaching Team that came together here in Chalong, Phuket.
Unit 27 was conceived by Father and Son (Rob & Dayle Hallam) during a ‘boys holiday’ in 2013 to the world-famous Soi Tad Ied in Chalong, commonly known as fitness street. They fell in love with the vibe of the street, the people here in ‘The land of smiles and the outright beauty of the island Phuket.
Dayle had just completed his British University Degree in Strength and Conditioning (not many in Asia can boast such a qualification) and, over a beer (predictably) both saw an opportunity to open a high quality & World-class fitness facility right here on The Soi.
There are very few other gyms in Thailand who offer the opportunity to train in facilities, and with coaches, superior to even most western gyms.
But unfortunately, those that do are all mainly orientated around Martial Arts Training, with fitness just being a part of the service. Unit 27 total conditioning was designed, built, and is operated purely to offer fitness training, it’s at the core of our business and it must be what people want as many are now imitating our style, sessions, and vibe – but none equal it 😉
We believe it’s because we are family owned and that our main objectives have, and always will be, client satisfaction and standards of quality/cleanliness.
Rob Hallam, Owner, and CEO has a varied background ranging from service with the British military as an Instructor, Commando forces Soldier and Operational Bomb Disposal Officer to civilian EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Operator.
His work took him all over the globe working in hazardous environments such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia, Mozambique and many more challenging places. He established a Land Mine Clearance Company in 2010 and the success of this business provided the opportunity for him to establish Unit 27.
His vision is for Unit 27 to become his legacy for both his sons, Dayle and Joe (Joe is following in his brother’s footsteps at this time), and hence the primary objective is to create a long term, successful, and highly regarded business for them to inherit.. the point of the above? It’s not about the money, it’s about the Unit being the best there is and Rob won’t be happy unless this is what he leaves to his boys. That’s maybe why the unit is not only rated as the #1 gym in Phuket by TripAdvisor but why it also remains one of the most affordable.

Since opening we’ve conducted constant expansion and improvement to treble our floor space, added saunas, ice baths, indoor spin studios, obtained the only CrossFit affiliation on the island, and thus opened CrossFit Phuket & we’ve become the official Conditioning partners of Phuket FC. We’ve also created Unit 27 Muscle Bar to take care of all your nutrition needs, established Unit 27 Primal Fitness which is fully equipped with state-of-the-art Hammer Strength equipment and we’ve moved to be the #1 Gym in Phuket on Trip Advisor! Not bad, we reckon 😉
What’s to come ?
Well, we are set to open Unit 27 Technical Fight Factory in October 2015. An absolutely World Class Mixed Martial Arts School of Excellence which will be managed by UFC/One FC veteran James ‘SledgeHammer’ McSweeney & Fernando Maccachero, who is currently the only Brazilian Top Team 6th Dan Black Belt in Asia.
We’re due to begin Unit 27 Operation Transformation soon also.
Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the world, to the best of our knowledge, and with this, we will take a very limited number of VIP clients through a structured transformation process including personal training, nutrition, Neuro-Linguistic programming, Physiotherapy as required, opportunities to indulge in world-class laser & dental treatment, excursions and so much more.
There will be pre and post-training programs, full medical testing before, during, and after your visit and we wrap it all up with great accommodation and our entire team being totally dedicated to you as an individual – from the moment you sign up.
