Keith Richards

For over half a century Keith Richards has been best known as the guitarist with one of the greatest rock bands in musical history, The Rolling Stones.

Keith Richards was born 18 December 1943 at Livingston Hospital, in Dartford, Kent, England. He is the only child of Doris (Dupree) and Bertrand Richards. His father was a factory worker who was injured in World War II during the Normandy invasion.

Keith Richards’ paternal grandparents were Socialists and civic leaders; his great-grandfather’s family originated from Wales. His maternal grandfather, Augustus Theodore Dupree, who toured Britain with a jazz big band, “Gus Dupree and his Boys”, fostered Richards’ interest in guitar.

Keith Richards’ mother bought him his first guitar and he played at home, listening to recordings by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and others.

His father, on the other hand, disparaged his son’s musical enthusiasm. One of Richards’ first guitar heroes was Scotty Moore

The band has kept him so busy that time for a solo career has been limited.

This week he released his third solo album, and his first for 32 years!

He tells us all about it in this edition of Top of the Pops.

We also hear from another legendary guitarist from a successful band who returns with a solo album. David Gilmour from Pink Floyd has just released his fourth album, and we find out how his solo material differs from his well known group.

There is new music from Lana Del Rey, Naughty Boy, Stylo G, Ellie Goulding and Gabrielle Aplin.

Plus we have the top 5 best-selling songs in the UK, and a look at who is selling the most in Japan.

Top of the Pops from the BBC is presented by Kim Robson and available LIVE via satellite at 3pm Thai time and again with a re-run at 4PM on a Sunday.
