For over half a century Keith Richards has been best known as the guitarist with one of the greatest rock bands in musical history, The Rolling Stones.

Keith Richards was born 18 December 1943 at Livingston Hospital, in Dartford, Kent, England. He is the only child of Doris (Dupree) and Bertrand Richards. His father was a factory worker who was injured in World War II during the Normandy invasion.

Keith Richards’ paternal grandparents were Socialists and civic leaders; his great-grandfather’s family originated from Wales. His maternal grandfather, Augustus Theodore Dupree, who toured Britain with a jazz big band, “Gus Dupree and his Boys”, fostered Richards’ interest in guitar.

Keith Richards’ mother bought him his first guitar and he played at home, listening to recordings by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and others.

The band has kept him so busy that time for a solo career has been limited.

This week he released his third solo album, and his first for 32 years!

He tells us all about it in this edition of Top of the Pops.
